How Drywall is Earth-Friendly: Supporting Earth-Friendly Construction Practices

Apr 21, 2025 | Drywall Installation, Home Remodeling

When you think of “going green,” drywall probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But here’s the good news: drywall has come a long way, and today’s materials and practices are more earth-conscious than ever. At Busy B Drywall, we believe in doing quality work that also respects the planet — and that starts with understanding how the materials we use can support sustainability.

Drywall is earth-friendly - Here's how:

♻️ 1. Drywall Can Be Made from Recycled Materials

Modern drywall often contains synthetic gypsum, a byproduct of cleaning emissions from coal-fired power plants. Instead of sending this material to landfills, it's safely processed and turned into drywall. In fact, over 75% of drywall in the U.S. is now made using synthetic gypsum!

Not only does this reduce waste, but it also cuts down on the need for traditional mining. Plus, the paper facing on most drywall panels is made from 100% recycled paper, which further supports eco-friendly manufacturing.

Natural vs. Synthetic Gypsum: What’s the Difference?

Drywall is made from gypsum, and it can come from two sources: natural or synthetic.

  • Natural gypsum is mined from the earth, which requires excavation and processing.

  • Synthetic gypsum, also known as FGD gypsum, is a byproduct of coal-fired power plants. It’s created when sulfur dioxide is removed from exhaust gases — a process that helps reduce air pollution.

Here’s the eco-friendly twist: synthetic gypsum is chemically identical to natural gypsum, but it recycles industrial waste that would otherwise go to landfills. In fact, most drywall today — including what we often use at Busy B Drywall — contains synthetic gypsum. It’s just as strong and safe, but with a greener footprint.

Using synthetic gypsum helps reduce mining, lower emissions, and support a more sustainable cycle of reuse.

2. It’s Recyclable at the End of Its Life

Home remodels and repairs often generate a lot of debris — but drywall doesn’t have to be part of the landfill problem. Drywall is recyclable, and in many areas, scrap pieces or old drywall can be processed into:

  • New drywall sheets

  • Soil conditioner (gypsum helps improve soil structure)

  • Cement or plaster ingredients

Whenever possible, we work with partners who support recycling or responsibly disposing of job site materials.

3. Greener Manufacturing Practices

The drywall industry is evolving. Many manufacturers are implementing energy-efficient and closed-loop systems that recycle water and reduce waste. Newer facilities often use cleaner fuels, like natural gas, or even tap into renewable energy sources to reduce emissions.

What does that mean for you? You're getting a high-quality product that’s made with less environmental impact — and that’s something worth building on.

4. Lighter Drywall = Lower Carbon Emissions

Modern drywall is being engineered to be lighter and stronger. That means it requires less fuel to transport, which reduces the carbon footprint from the factory to your job site. It also makes handling and installation easier and safer for crews.

At Busy B Drywall, we love using lightweight drywall options whenever the job allows. It’s a win-win: better for the team and better for the environment.

5. Drywall Supports Energy Efficiency in Your Home

Drywall doesn’t just form your walls — it helps insulate your home. When installed correctly, drywall works alongside insulation and sealing to reduce drafts and improve temperature control. That means lower energy bills for you and less strain on the environment.

We also offer services that include framing, painting, and interior remodeling, and we always encourage smart, sustainable choices throughout the process.

Small Steps Make a Big Impact

At Busy B Drywall, we know that sustainability isn't just a buzzword — it’s a responsibility. From using the right materials to reducing job site waste, we’re committed to helping homeowners and businesses make upgrades that look great and feel good.
